To the Editor: Recently, erroneous messages have been sent to many households in District 158. The writer is very convincing. But readers of these messages should seek the truth before making judgments. Consider: School financial records are audited yearly by independent outside auditors. District 158 always has passed these audits. Paul Halverson, assistant superintendent for financial services, received the International Association of School Business Officials Recognition of Excel-lence in Financial Reporting Award twice. District 158 was one of 53 school districts of more than 880 to receive this award. The district borrows millions in short-term loans to pay its bills, and is in danger of being unable to repay them. Without the referendum, there will be no money to open any of the new schools. Many things vital to education will be lost. Class size will increase at all levels. Middle school students will be on split shifts. Opportunities will be lost. Students, families, staff, the community and education will suffer. Remaining staff members will struggle to provide the best education possible, and many students will succeed despite the odds. Please arm yourself with the truth and vote your conscience Nov. 2.
